Bikkurim - thanking Hashem

The possuk says in this week’s sedrah: וְעַתָּה הִנֵּה הֵבֵאתִי אֶת רֵאשִׁית פְּרִי הָאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר נָתַתָּה לִּי ה' “You will come to the cohen who will be in those days and you will say to him; ‘I have told today to Hashem your G-d that I have come to the land which Hashem swore to our fathers to give to us.’ And the cohen will take the basket from your hands and he will place it in front of the mizbeach of Hashem your G-d. And you will answer and you will say before Hashem your G-d, ‘Lavan sought to destroy my father and he went down to Mitzraim…And now behold I have brought the first fruits of the land that you, H

Shaatnez

Shaatnez The possuk says in this week’s sedrah: גדלים תעשה לך על ארבע כנפות כסותך אשר תכסה בה     “You should not wear shaatnez , a mixture of wool and linen together. You should make fringes on the four corners of your clothes which you cover yourself with.” Aseh docheh lo saaseh The gemara in Yevamos ( daf gimmel amud beis ) learns from the fact that these two pessukim are stated next to each other that you are allowed to wear tzitzis even if the threads are shaatnez when combined with the garment. The gemara says that this is a principle that applies to the entire Torah - aseh docheh lo saaseh - A positive mitzva overrides an issur : לא תעשה גרידא מנלן דדחי דכתיב  (דברים כב, יא) לא תלבש שעטנז גדילים תעשה לך “How do you know that a positive mitzvah (a mitzvas aseh ) overrides a negative mitzvah (a mitzas lo saaseh )? The passuk says לא תלבש שעטנז גדילים תעשה לך – ‘You should not wear shaatnez – and then the passuk says – you should make fring

Lo sasur, Rashi, the Ramban and the Rambam

Lo sasur The possuk in this week’s sedrah says: עַל פִּי הַתּוֹרָה אֲשֶׁר יוֹרוּךָ וְעַל הַמִּשְׁפָּט אֲשֶׁר יֹאמְרוּ לְךָ תַּעֲשֶׂה לֹא תָסוּר מִן הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר יַגִּידוּ לְךָ יָמִין וּשְׂמֹאל “According to the law that they direct you and the judgement that they will say to you you should do, you should not stray from the matter that they instruct you to the right or to the left.” There is a machlokess between the Rambam and the Ramban ( Sefer haMitzvos, shoresh alef ) whether this passuk refers to all derabannan’s, in which case every derabannan is really deoraisoh (Rambam), or if lo sasur only applies to derashos that are made from pessukim using the shlosh esreh midos she’hatorah nidreshes bahem but a takanah miderebannan is not included in this passuk. The Ramban Reb Chaim asks ( kovetz shiurim, kuntrus divrei sofrim ) why we need to listen to derabannan’s according to the Ramban? If the passuk of lo sasur is only telling you that we need to follow the way tha

Do people in chutz la'aretz have to go to the beis hamikdash on Yom Tov?

The possuk says in this week’s sedrah: שָׁלוֹשׁ פְּעָמִים בַּשָּׁנָה יֵרָאֶה כָל זְכוּרְךָ אֶת פְּנֵי ה' אֱלֹקיךָ “Three times a year all of your males should be seen before Hashem.” Does this apply to everyone or only to people who live in Eretz Yisroel? He boasted, ‘The Torah says “any non-jew should not eat the korban pesach” and “anyone without a bris should not e
